The Unknowing

Viet-nam fell to the communists in 1975. Fast-forward now with me to 1986, 1987 or so. I am traveling in northern Alabama with my best friend, also a 'nam vet. We stop in some mid-size town for a noon meal, at a fast-food place.

So picture this: I'm wearing jeans and an OD t-shirt (the real OD; not the brown crap they have nowadays) and this OD t-shirt is festooned as follows. At the top, like right below where the head comes out, is a golden ranger tab. Below that, silver-white jump wings. Between the two, in red, the following words: " COMBATANT VIET-NAM WAR 1971-73 ".

As we're walking up to the order counter, I notice that 16-year old Suzy is reading my t-shirt. I know, because I see that she's mouthing the words (to herself). Just as we reach the counter, she turns to the other girl and says, "Hey Bobbie-Jo, I didn't know there was a war goin' on back in 1971". And Bobbie-Jo replies, "Sure. The Viet-nam war." To which Suzy replied, "Oh. An' just where did that-there Viet-nam war take place at, anyway?"
