John, I can't imagine waffles being a "stodgy mess" but I surely sympathize. Fortunately, regular waffle irons are very inexpensive. Mine is a little cheapie Procter-Silex Morning Baker. And it came with a recipe for CHOCOLATE WAFFLES. [pause for a moment of respectful silence] But Jo and I will wait patiently while the rest of you round up the appropriate equipment and then we'll have a group waffle throwdown! What say you all?

Waffles are funny that way, aren't they? They do seem just for special occasions. I always get some going on Christmas morning. The other times I make them I keep thinking it must be some kind of special day.

I never tried chicken and gravy or the like on them, Dee. Sounds intriguing. I'm the maple syrup, honey, butter and fruit toppings kind of gal, oh, and with a heap of whipping cream on top if I have it.

Have to admit that if my childhood introduction to 'waffles' had been to these beauties rather than the stodgy messes I was forced to enjoy my adult approach to them would be more favourable. If I see a waffle iron cheap I shall be sorely tempted to break a lifetime of estrangement and go with the waffle. :-)
